Food for Thought: What are adaptogens?
by Amelia Broughton
Supporting a healthy immune system can be as simple as eating a more plant-based diet and intaking Vitamin C daily. And while we will always love our fruits and veggies, we’ve recently become quite fond of the magical world of adaptogens.
What are adaptogens?
They are defined as non-toxic plants, such as herbs, roots, functional mushrooms, that help the body handle stressors. These stressors might be physical, chemical, biological, environmental, but in summary, stressors take the body out of homeostasis or balance.
With the recent release of the phenomenal film, Fantastic Fungi, we wanted to share a few of our beloved adaptogenic immune system supporters that come in the form of functional mushrooms.
Reishi - “known as the Queen of Mushrooms, Mushroom of Immortality, Lingzhi mushroom, Ganoderma Lucidum, or straightforward reishi, this mushroom has been used to support well-being for over 2,000 years in China and Japan”
Lion’s Mane - “said to strengthen the immune system, stimulate digestion, and protect against cancer”
Chaga - “loaded with antioxidant properties to support your immune system and overall wellbeing”
We love adding these adaptogens in our morning tea or coffee, in a smoothie, or with some juice. Make sure to find product that is organic first and foremost and third-party tested*.
