Weekly Self-Care: Emotional Check-in

by Amelia Broughton

You are the expert of your experience, your life, your needs, wants and desires.  Only you know what is ultimately best for you despite endless amounts of information flooding our awareness at any given moment.  During these times of change, it can be helpful to schedule the time to listen to yourself, to ask yourself what would feel best for you today.

Our invitation is to do a Daily Check-in with yourself. Journal, talk with a friend, or record yourself speaking out loud.  Below are a few of our favorite questions for self-inquiry for self-care.

  • What are you feeling right now?

  • What feels most challenging in your experience?

  • What is working for you currently?

  • What would contribute to your overall sense of wellbeing today?

For example...

Today I am feeling calm and energized.  I notice that I’ve had a moment of feeling a lot of sadness and frustration with my roommates.  My roommates have been the most challenging aspect of my day. We don’t seem to see eye to eye on how to maintain communal space and everyone seems to be especially irritated today.  Overall, we’ve been able to listen to each other and respect our differences, but that doesn’t mean it’s not been hard. Taking a bath tonight would greatly contribute to my overall sense of relaxation and ease today.  I also went for a long walk in the neighborhood earlier that helped calm my nerves after that hard conversation this morning with my partner.

Make sense?  Feel free to follow these or mix it up and find your own flow.

These Daily Check-ins have been a gamechanger for us.  The more we can be aware of who we are and how we are feeling and experiencing life, the more awareness, and in turn mindfulness we are incorporating into every moment.  Presence is the key to alleviating stress and anxiety.

Try it out this week and let us know what you’re noticing through this daily exercise!
