With media consumption skyrocketing over the past 2 months, our screen usage is taking a toll on our mental health and wellbeing. In this article, we’ll explore the many ways in which you can shift your mindset, and your lifestyle to better support your consumption habits.

Of the 3.8 billion people using social media in 2020, our guess is that most users are feeling some form of dissonance around their relationship with digital media, news outlets, and social platforms, especially given the global shift that is happening.

Over the years, we’ve watched how digital platforms have become the primary source for receiving news updates and information, and how social media has integrated seamlessly into our lives. On the upside, historic moments like these often probe our civic duty to become more educated on current events, but unfortunately one element is often overlooked; how does this increased media and technology engagement impact civilians’ thoughts, feelings, emotions and overall wellbeing.

That’s where we come in.

If you’re someone who has wondered how to best utilize technology to show up in these times of crisis, here are few questions to lead your process :

  • What platforms give you the most energy?

  • What are your core values?

  • How does technology help you express these values?

  • What offline activity helps you feel self expressed, and how can you make more time for this in  your life?

In just a few short months, digital media consumption in 2020 has risen to new heights. Research shared by J.P. Morgan shows that media platforms across the board have exponentially increased their user activity, and Facebook’s numerous platforms have increased their usage to 50% more in the past several months.

This overindulgence in headlines may be taking a toll on your mental and emotional wellbeing.

The reality is that we can consume all we want, but we do not need to listen to the news to bring us closer to our feelings and our values. Taking time and space for yourself to reflect on what you have read, watched, or generally consumed, will give you more power to choose how you want to move forward with action.
